About the Teacher
Michele S. Kernen, BSN

After graduating from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree, I practiced as an RN in the ICU/ER settings for 11 years. I taught Basic and Advanced Life Support as well as many other professional medical classes. I was CCRN (critical care) and CEN (emergency nurse) certified as well as Nursing Supervisor for a hospital.  In addition, I was a teacher at Bridgeway Christian Academy, a private school in Alpharetta, GA prior to moving to Texas. For the last eleven years, I have taught 15 different science courses to elementary, junior high, and high school students in the home schooling community. God has blessed me with the passion, joy, and energy to love teaching all ages of children about His creation from Physics to Biology to Chemistry to Human Anatomy and Physiology to Zoology and beyond!!! I have, also, taught French I/II. My education and experience in French includes three years in high school and three years in college. I love the French language and have greatly enjoyed teaching French to our children. This will be my eleventh year teaching science to home schooled children. I have enjoyed this opportunity greatly!

My greatest desire is to glorify God and His Son, Jesus, through teaching His children about His Creation. I desire to help each student grow to their greatest potential and become self-motivated learners with passion to help prepare and equip them for when they are called to serve others in their community. I desire to help the students truly understand the content being taught and become excited about the area of science they are studying. The students also learn about time management and being responsible and thankful for the education they have been blessed with. Effort and care are strongly encouraged and are very important in achieving and completing academic goals. I am blessed and thankful to be able to serve homeschooling families in our community in this way.

In addition to teaching, I coach soccer through SonSoccer, a program God started 11 years ago ( ).  I am an official North Texas State Soccer Association Coach and enjoy coaching soccer for home school, private, and public schooled children. I coach children ages 5 years old to 18 years old and love it! In SonSoccer, the session begins with God’s Word, a reading from the Bible, and prayer to our Lord, Jesus Christ. The players then warm-up, stretch, work on strength and conditioning drills, then learn and practice soccer skills (dribbling, passing, shooting, fakes, positioning and game play) with the session ending in a scrimmage to apply and practice what was learned.

My husband, Jim, and I have been married for 29 years.  Jim is a CPA and works for the Federal government in Dallas. After twelve years of home schooling, our three children all went to college. Allen, our oldest son, earned his master’s degree in Accounting at UNT; Ben, our second son earned his bachelor's degree in Chemistry at UNT. Rebecca received her bachelor's degree in Biology at  DBU and will be attending medical school at Texas Tech in Lubbock this fall. She also played soccer for the DBU Lady Patriots and loved it. God provided Ben and Rebecca with wonderful opportunities to intern at UT Southwestern Medical Center. Allen works with Grant Thornton accounting firm and Ben works for an international lab in Dallas. May Jesus be glorified through the work He calls us to do for Him.

All three children, when home schooled did amazing things! They won various academic awards at the district and state levels in PSIA (Private School Interscholastic Association) and, our oldest son, Allen, won 2nd place in Zoology at the Fort Worth Regional Science Fair, the 1st place Tarrant County Master Gardener’s Award, and the 3rd place Quality Award for his 7th grade science fair project. We are deeply grateful for the opportunity to home school our children all these years. God called Jim and I to home school our three children after moving to Texas and we have been truly blessed by His guidance and faithful provision. We live in Carrollton with our turtles, toads, rabbits, scorpion, lizards and dog, Luke J. When I started teaching science, God started providing animals for the students that I teach! May God, the Creator of all things, seen and unseen, be praised and worshiped as we learn about His creation!
